Choose one artwork to spend time with before trying to see the rest. At SWELL Sculpture Festival, 11–20 September 2026, the setting is Currumbin’s coastline and the outdoor exhibition is free. For a visit from Contessa, a sculpture walk followed by the Smalls Gallery gives the day two different scales: works in the landscape, then smaller pieces to consider indoors.
Leave a day clear in your Main Beach stay and resist adding too many stops. Art is a good reason to travel south; the river and gardens will still be there when you return.
Begin with a question
Invited artist Patricia Piccinini brings Salute to the Sun, a bronze sculpture that combines references to living forms and machinery. In her description of the work, she considers the boundary between the natural and artificial, with a form that draws on a deer, plants, a human and a motorcycle.
Read that account before your visit, or look first and read it afterwards. Those are two different ways into the same work. Notice which elements you recognise immediately and which take longer to resolve. You do not need to settle on one interpretation before moving on.
This is also a useful approach to the wider exhibition. Instead of counting how many sculptures you have passed, choose a few that hold your attention. Look at the material, the outline and the space around each one. If you are visiting as a couple or with friends, compare what drew you to it before turning to the programme.
Add a curator’s perspective
For more context, the official Guided Sculpture Walks are listed daily during the festival at 10 am, from VIKA, 766 Pacific Parade, Currumbin. These are booked, paid walks led by guest curators, with a printed programme included. Use the booking page for current pricing and availability.
The organiser says routes can be adapted to a group and may use the pathway and sand where participants are able. Discuss any access requirements before booking. A guided walk offers a shared starting point for the day, particularly if one person follows contemporary art closely and another is approaching it for the first time.
Keep the time afterwards open rather than booking a second activity immediately. You may want to return to a work the guide discussed or take a break before going inside.
Change scale at the Smalls Gallery
The SWELL Smalls Gallery is also at VIKA, 766 Pacific Parade, with free entry 9 am–5 pm, 11–20 September. Original works are available to buy, and the gallery has its own People’s Choice Award. You can visit simply to look; there is no need to arrive with a purchase in mind.
Make this the second part of the outing if you would like a more contained setting after the outdoor exhibition. Compare the experience of viewing something at close range with seeing a sculpture against the beach. The lounge looks towards Currumbin Beach, with food and drinks supplied by Kinship Currumbin.
SWELL’s accessibility information confirms both lift and stair access to the gallery. For the outdoor portion, some beach and rock locations have limited access, so review that guidance when deciding how to spend your time.
Allow for the journey from Main Beach
Check getting to SWELL when choosing your departure time, especially for a booked morning walk. The organiser lists transport and parking options; plan the complete journey to Currumbin rather than relying on a general trip south along the coast.
Back at Contessa, a full kitchen, dining area and private balcony give you a place to settle after the exhibition, while Tedder Avenue is five minutes away on foot if you would like to eat out. Explore the apartments and leave room in your stay for a day spent looking carefully.
